Know your options
Bed frame
A separate frame with a mattress support platform, often using slats. Overall dimensions can extend beyond the mattress.
Divan base
An upholstered base, sometimes offered with drawers and a matching headboard. Check which pieces are included.
Platform top
A rigid support surface. Its feel can differ from a sprung base beneath the same mattress.
Sprung base
A base with some give from springs or flexible slats. Mattress compatibility still needs checking.
Check the combination
- Confirm mattress and frame measurements together.
- Ask about slat spacing, centre support and any weight limits.
- Check whether the headboard, legs and mattress are included.
- Confirm whether the base arrives in sections and what assembly is needed.
Think about everyday use
A tall upholstered headboard makes a different impression from an open wooden frame. Consider bedside tables, socket positions and how easily you can reach around the bed. If storage matters, decide whether drawers or an ottoman opening will work better in your room.
