Mattress types, simply explained
Pocket sprung
Individual springs sit in fabric pockets and respond separately to movement. The fillings and spring design both contribute to the feel.
Open coil
A connected spring system. Compare the complete mattress and its feel rather than judging it from the spring name alone.
Memory foam
Foam that moulds to pressure and shape. Try how it feels when you settle in and when you roll over.
Hybrid
A combination of springs and comfort layers, often including foam. Ask what the layers are and what each model feels like.
Build a useful shortlist
- Confirm the exact size and the type of base it will sit on.
- Choose a total budget, including a protector and any delivery charge.
- Compare your preferred feel across a few models.
- Ask what is included, the care instructions and the actual product guarantee.
What to bring to the showroom
A room measurement, photos of your base and the names of styles you have saved are useful. If you share the bed, visit together where possible. Tell the team what you like and dislike about your current mattress.
The types in this guide explain the wider market. Check with UC Beds for the models currently available.
