CHOOSING YOUR MATTRESS

Pocket sprung, foam or hybrid?

Understand the main construction terms, then compare the actual feel, size and details of each mattress.

Matty, your friendly UC Beds guide

The main types, explained

Pocket sprung

Springs sit in individual fabric pockets. Comfort layers above the springs also contribute to how the mattress feels.

Open coil

A linked spring structure supports the mattress. Compare the cushioning and feel of the complete model.

Foam

Foam constructions vary. Memory foam is one type of comfort material; check what the particular mattress contains.

Hybrid

Usually a combination of springs and foam or other comfort layers. Check the specification rather than relying on the label.

Look beyond one headline number

Compare the complete construction, comfort rating, mattress depth and care instructions. A spring count alone does not describe the feel of the finished mattress, and counts may be quoted for a particular size.

Ask what is included in the published specification. If a detail is missing, the UC Beds team can check it for the exact model rather than assuming it applies across the range.

Check the bed base too

Confirm that the mattress is suitable for your base, including the manufacturer’s slat-spacing requirements where relevant. There is no single spacing rule that works for every mattress.
