Choose the area you want to define
Living room
Decide how the rug will sit with the sofa, chairs and coffee table. Compare the whole grouping, not just the empty floor.
Bedroom
Check the rug’s position beside or beneath the bed and the amount visible around it.
Dining space
Allow for chairs when they are pulled out as well as when tucked under the table.
Measure length and width
Check the dimensions in centimetres for the exact option. A range may contain several shapes and sizes with different prices.
Try a paper or tape outline and make sure doors, drawers and furniture can still move freely. Check clearance where a thick rug could affect a door.
Compare texture and care
Look at the stated pile height, material and cleaning guidance. A soft, deep texture and a flatter surface suit different preferences and routines.
Do not assume a rug can be machine washed or used outdoors. Use the specific product instructions, and check any underlay requirements for your floor type.
Bring the room together
- Compare the rug with the sofa and floor rather than in isolation.
- Check whether the pattern scale changes between sizes.
- Keep edges flat and follow advice on reducing slipping.
- Follow the care label for cleaning and drying.
